About

WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES: Who are these workshops aimed at? Any walker who has wondered why there are different shapes in the landscape. Why is that mound a mess, while another mound is a crescent shape? Or why rocks appear to have patterns in the landscape, or why we have such spectacular mountain scenery in the UK. They area also aimed at Mountain Leaders wanting to inspire their groups with a love of the landscape.

As walkers we see lots of landscapes and within those landscapes, smaller landforms from large Glacial troughs down to small microscale features such as striations. The British uplands have been transformed over millions of years through Geology and Geomorphology, whether by glaciation, water or repeated freeze-thaw.

We will be looking at several different landforms of different scales both glacial, periglacial and fluvial. The Landgdale Valley and Pikes are a textbook case study in these environments. By the end of the day you should have a good idea of what processes have sculptured the uplands of the Lake District and what are the resulting landforms. We will also be looking at other environmental topics that we see enroute, such as plants and land use. You will then be able to apply this knowledge to other mountain areas.

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED: Full mountain clothing for cold and wet conditions. Camera/phone would also be useful for taking photos

CATERING/FOOD: You will need to bring food and drinks to keep you going for a mountain day.

WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS: Helen Howe is holds a degree in Geography and has taught physical geography for many years up to A level both in a school and for the Field Studies Council. She has run several highly successful Landscape Detective days in different parts of the UK for MTA and as a result been asked to speak on the British uplands for several different groups. Helen has a passion for sharing the British mountain landscape with others.
