Award Description

This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to lead hillwalking groups in summer conditions on mountainous routes not requiring the planned use of a rope. Established in 1964, this was the first qualification created by Mountain Training.

This course is being delivered by Vicky Owen on behalf of Bryn Williams Mountaineering.

Hi, I’m Bryn and I have  worked full time in the mountaineering industry since 1998. I have worked for a huge number of organisations including Mountain Training as the Executive Officer where I was responsible for managing the qualification system and network of course providers around Wales.

For my training courses I believe in creating a supportive atmosphere so you can focus on learning and developing your skills with confidence. We work in small groups and take a relaxed approach to training. My staff share the same values and are carefully selected to represent me and my business. 

We'll use venues all around Eryri/Snowdonia with the simple aim of having an enjoyable time in the mountains and do some great journeys while learning in a practical way.

Course Details

• We start each day at a superb cafe where we’ll make a plan for the day.
• We’ll car share to and from venues.
• You’ll get sent course notes with details on the program, kit list and logistics.
• It will be a small course of 6 participants and the staff member.
• Courses are non-residential (lots of accommodation in the Llanberis area).

Course Program

• Day 1: Leadership and navigation
• Day 2: Leadership through steep ground
• Day 3: Steep ground and ropework
• Day 4: Hazards and emergency procedures
• Day 5-6: Snowdonia mini-break, aka the expedition!
