Group management is the Cinderella of training for the awards. So much training is focused on the hard skills, navigation, movement over difficult ground, ropework and so on. Even access and environment get dedicated CPD days. Group management, on the other hand, usually gets discussed as a background skill to some other topic. Yet you can be deferred for poor group management.
So Peak Region have come up with a new idea for a workshop, and have trialled it behind the scenes. The Leadership Skills event will devote a whole day to this, encouraging people who lead from the front to keep their attention focused as well on what is going on behind.
The route will be through glorious White Peak terrain, so the nav and walking will not be challenging. The leadership skills, however, will be transferable to all sorts of other contexts.
We will be asking participants to engage in scenarios, and to take their turn in implementing strategies for dealing with anything from personality clashes to major incidents. Expect the unexpected .....
Usual expedition info: bring food and drink, clothing appropriate for the expected conditions, and any meds you might need. As this is a peer-led activity, you are responsible for your own well-being and safety; but it will help if you notify the instructors of any health issue which may affect your day among the White Peak hills.
And bring the map: OL24, The Peak District, White Peak Area; and also a baseplate compass.
