About

The Mountain Leader scheme is designed for people who want to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the UK and Ireland. If you love being out in the mountains and want to share your enthusiasm with others, become a Mountain Leader and you’ll never look back.

Mountain Leaders operate the length and breadth of the country with all sorts of groups of people; from Scouts and schoolchildren to outdoor instructors and walking groups. The qualification is what you make it and there are countless opportunities for passionate Mountain Leaders.

This is a 5 day course designed to assess you against the syllabus competencies but will be run in a relaxed style to help you perform and achieve.

Before you attend an assessment you will also be sent a ‘Home Paper’ to complete in your own time. This will be a set of questions designed to explore many areas of the syllabus, some of which may not directly be covered in the five day assessment.

Mountain Leaders should be competent in the following key areas, all of which will be covered, to a greater or lesser extent, during your five day assessment course.

  • Group management
  • Navigation
  • Access and the environment
  • Hazards (including steep ground and rivers) and emergency procedures
  • Equipment
  • Expedition skills
  • Weather
  • Background knowledge

Before you book onto a Mountain Leader Assessment course, make sure you have done the following:

  • You must have attended a Mountain Leader training course (or have been granted exemption)
  • You must be familiar with the syllabus
  • You must have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Mountain Days in three different regions of the UK and Ireland
  • You must have logged at least 8 nights camping, including at least 4 nights wild camping
  • You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved at least two full days or sixteen hours of instruction and included an element of assessment

Course Duration: 5 days (Including 2 night expedition)
