IMPORTANT FOREST ENTRANCE AND PARKING NOTE:
Entry to and parking in Gosford Forest Park is FREE to Workshop participants.
If asked on arrival by Forest Staff to pay the Entrance Fee, identify yourself as attending a MTA NI Workshop in the Function Hall and you should gain FREE admittance - any problems call the MTA NI Reg Co-ord on: 07516 230319.
Parking for Workshop participants will be in Car Park B; an overflow car park near the Function Hall and on the way to the Horsebox Car Park.
WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The Workshop will be delivered in 2 back-to-back Sessions covering 2 related topics.
1. 9.30am to 12.30pm(ish): Cold Injury Prevention, Treatment and Management. This Session will be delivered through a classroom-based informal presentation interspersed with practical 'hands-on' outdoor scenarios.
12.30pm(ish) to 1pm(ish): Lunch - To prepare Workshop participants for the afternoon Session lunch will be eaten outdoors. See also Catering / Food below.
2. 1pm(ish) to 5.30pm(ish): Casualty Packaging. This Session will be delivered outdoors through informal participant 'hands-on' practical scenarios.
EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED:
Although the Workshop Sessions will be delivered in a Forest Park PARTICIPANTS MUST COME PREPARED AND KITTED FOR A DAY IN THE MOUNTAINS.
CATERING/FOOD:
Workshop participants will have access to the Function Hall kitchen UPTO 12.30pm by which time we must vacate the building.
The kitchen has a sink with potable water, kettle, toaster and microwave.
Bring sufficient food and drink for 'YOUR TYPICAL DAY IN THE MOUNTAINS' with the exception of your lunch if you would like to avail of the kitchen facilities.
WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS:
Session 1: Led by Ronan McBride - Ronan has spent over 20 years working in the NHS as an Adult nurse, with over 13 years of that spent as an Intensive Care nurse. In this role he has cared for critically ill patients, managed teams of nurses in a high pressure environment and developed his knowledge and skills in identifying and treating the deteriorating patient. Currently working in project management within the health service, he has developed a keen understanding of resource use and allocation, and troubleshooting issues within healthcare teams.
Outside of work, Ronan has been a member of the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) since 2013, adapting his clinical experience to support the delivery of first response in the mountain environment. He currently holds the position of Fundraising Officer and sits on the MMRT Trustee Board.
Ronan is also a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT), training through WEMSI International at Glenmore Lodge in 2016. After holding a position as Potential Faculty Member (PFM) with the Irish WEMSI team, Ronan became a full faculty member in 2018 and has been part of the annual course delivery since then.
In addition Ronan has completed Mountain Skills Training in 2024 and is progressing to Mountain Leader to formalise his experiences.
Session 2: Led by Joe Bastable of Born-2-Bimble (B-2-B) - Joe is currently the MTA NI Regional Co-ordinator, a Volunteer Walk Leader within the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust for the Public Health Agency Walking for Health Programme, a Volunteer Groom for the Riding for the Disabled Carriage Driving Group in Ballyward and holds the Camping Leader, Lowland Leader, Hill and Moorland Leader and Expedition Skills Module qualifications and is Mountain Leader Trained. He has been a keen outdoor sports enthusiast; road cycling, mountain biking, paddle sports and downhill and cross-country skiing (to list just a few!) since the age of 15 and has now accumulated 45+ years experience of hiking and mountaineering within the UK, RoI, Mainland Europe, Canary Islands, Cyprus & long haul in Tanzania.
CANCELLATION PROCEDURE:
Not applicable due to the necessity to book and pay a hire fee for the use of the Gosford Forest Park Function Hall.
