WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES
This workshop is for MTA, AMI and BAIML members who currently work on Mountain Training walking qualification courses - Lowland Leader, Hill and Moorland Leader, and Mountain Leader, or for those who wish to work on these courses in the near future.
During the course we will look at what navigation techniques need to be taught at LL, HML and ML levels, how we might deliver these, and how we might assess them. We will focus on progressions for learning and teaching navigation, and discuss simplifying our teaching, rather than overloading our candidates. We’ll look at which navigation techniques are genuinely useful to the navigator, and which are maybe less useful. Discussing assessing, what is the required standard, and how we might record each candidate’s performance using digital tools will conclude the day. The workshop will be partly indoor and partly outdoor based.
Please note - this workshop is not suitable for LL, HML, or ML trainees as a refresher prior to an assessment.
EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED
Although this is largely indoor based, there will be some outdoor sessions locally. Please bring personal walking equipment, packed lunch, OS Explorer OL5 and a compass.
CATERING/FOOD
Tea/coffee will be available, but please bring your lunch, or use the community village shop in Bampton (2 minutes walk from the venue) to buy something

training and assessment courses, as well as teaching navigation at a
more basic level to beginner walkers through the National Navigation
Award Scheme since 1998. In addition to his Mountain Training
qualifications Graham also has O level and A level Navigation
qualifications, which enables him to understand both useful and less
useful ways to teach navigation to others, and to assess which navigation tools are most often required by the navigator.
