This course is approved by BAIML as meeting the training and CPD requirements for Safeguarding according to the 2024 UIMLA Standard for both candidates/aspirants and existing IMLs. A full (6 hrs) day, certificated for the Safeguarding element (3 hours).

A workshop also relevent to other association members, MLs, DofE & also designed for those working in the UK and overseas,
expedition leaders/supervisors and those leading treks.

Considering the 2024 UIMLA Standard under Competency 3.4. The workshop gives individuals' tools for managing and leading teams within a specific context of promoting the 'safeguarding' of others and the Leader. It includes interactive sessions, real case studies and scenario-based examples, along with up-to-date national and international developments in Safeguarding. The session is suitable for trainee, new and established leaders alike who want to develop their skills and knowledge and share their experiences. The workshop is relevant for those who lead both youth and adult expeditions. A useful and practical resource pack is supplied to participants.

The workshop will be delivered by Matt Brown who is an IML, business owner, Adventurer and experienced Independent Safeguarding Consultant/Trainer and has led on Safeguarding developments/policy & practice for National Governments & Local Authorities. Matt also has direct experience working for the International Social Service (ISS). Alongside these roles he has been leading and working on expeditions worldwide for over 30 years. He has advised and assisted the BMC Executive Safeguarding Group and other organisations including BAIML and UIMLA on Safeguarding Policy, issues, as relevant for training/coaching for outdoor leaders, climbing and mountaineering activities. Matt has specialist statutory child/adult protection investigation/management experience both in the police and as a senior social worker, working across the UK's Safeguarding Boards.

The workshop is a mix of mostly indoor training with a brief time outside close to the centre.

Please bring a notepad and pen and suitable clothing for the outside part. Bring also a packed lunch (hot/cold drinks and snacks will be provided). There is also a café on-site).

The workshop will be held at the Cwm Carn Forest Visitor Centre, Newport, South Wales, NP11 7FA.

The workshop is subsidised for BAIML/MTA Members.
