About

Trainee workshops are designed to support your journey towards becoming a professional Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor. They are an opportunity to build on your technical skills and develop your decision making post MCI training.

The aim of the workshops is to support your learning and understanding of the different techniques and principles that underpin safe practise as a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor. The focus will be on the why’s, rather than the what in your practise.

You will leave the day with a clearer picture of your future development needs and how to meet them, the day is not a form of mock assessment.

This day will provide trainees with the opportunity to practise the skills and techniques learnt on the training course with expert feedback. To ask questions about any techniques they are unsure of, and to support understanding of when and how to apply the techniques. It will also provide opportunity to network with other trainees. The workshop will take place in a single pitch environment.

Examples of what we could cover include;

  • Use of guide plate,
  • Self lining - safe set up and management whilst teaching
  • Teaching progressions
  • Information gathering - planning a day with clients
  • Managing abseils
  • Taking chest coils
  • Managing hand coils
  • Managing scrambling stances

The day will be delivered by Kath James

Students should bring: 50m single rope, climbing gear rack, minimum of two prussiks, personal climbing equipment and rock shoes & suitable mountain boots.
