WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

Discover the rich flora and fauna of the Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve.  The reserve sits on the north-western scarp of the Chiltern Hills, within the Chilterns National Landscape, and just a short drive from the M40 (between J5 & J6).

The main habitats are flower-rich chalk grassland, beech woodland, and juniper scrub. These support a wide range of flora and fauna, including the rare Chiltern Gentian (which we hope to find) and many butterflies species such as chalkhill blue and silver-spotted, dingy and grizzled skippers.

This Peer Learning workshop aims to help you to develop your own personal knowledge and to give you confidence to talk about the habitats and species we find.

The Stagecoach Oxford Tube runs a frequent service between Oxford and London which stops at Lewknor village, a short walk from the reserve. Oxford Tube | Coach Travel Between London & Oxford

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

Usual outdoor kit for the season/weather in the lowland environment.

If you have them, you may want to bring flower/butterfly ID guides, small hand held lens, binoculars.

You may also want to bring (not essential) OS Map Explorer 171 Chiltern Hills West (we will have a few spares).

WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS

This workshop is facilitated by Central & North London Regional Volunteers, Neil Perry and Philippa Sanders. Neil Perry is an International Mountain Leader (IML) based in Hertfordshire with a particular interest in the wildflowers and ecology of the Chiltern chalk grasslands. He enjoys encouraging others to look a little closer at the landscapes they walk through. Philippa (aka Pipsticks) (HML) lives locally, is passionate about the Chilterns, and encourages you to get curious by sharing her excellent knowledge of the local geology, landscape, flora and fauna.
