About

Outdoor Gear Coach ‘Peformance Layering’ Course.

The Cost of the workshop includes our book see below, cover price £15.

Why attend this course?

  • We teach the principles of LAYERING which don't change; what garment makers say changes each season.
  • We dispel the myths and misunderstandings that abound in competing brand marketing statements.
  • You will learn to achieve enhanced performance from your existing layers and make better, more relevant next purchases.
  • Gives you the ability to help others, from experienced clients to beginners.
  • Understanding sustainability claims. What matters and what doesn’t.
  • This is part of the Mountain Training Syllabus for ML etc.

     Background to course.

After training the BMC technical committee on a wide range of textile and garment issues and retail store staff in the UK and USA, we have designed this course to teach the skill of PERFORMANCE LAYERING for body core, hands and feet through four seasons, multiple environments and a broad range of activities.

Please bring with you 7 layers that could take you anywhere, in all seasons, hot or cold and even be over-layered together at a push.

    1. Base/thermal, 2 hot weather shirt, 3 wind shell, 4 mid-layer, 5 outer waterproof,
      1. 6 super warm layer (sometimes called a belay jacket or camp warm-up). 7 emergency layer, poly bag or bothy bag or?
      2. Layering for head, hands and feet to be used in conjunction with the above layers.

This will enable us to do a Garment layer analysis which is both a guided learning process and a record of what you have and what each does or does not do in terms of wicking, windproofing, insulation, waterproofing and mvt (moisture vapour transmission).

This may be used to enable better-informed client advice for not only UK areas but the typical faraway locations where the departure locations are becoming increasingly very hot but become very cold as altitude is gained. Also serves as a record of what you have and clarifies what it does and does not do and why. This is a structured memorable approach to understanding the core information supporting the skill of PERFORMANCE LAYERING.

These 3 min videos will give you a good start, and you will receive your copy of our book on arrival.
