The Day

The main objective will be to replace the existing tree abseil with a new bolted lower-off.

We’ll climb to the existing station, inspect the current tree anchor and surrounding rock, consider the best position for the replacement lower-off, and then install the new system.

The workshop will be very practical, covering the complete process from assessment and decision-making through to drilling, cleaning and resin-bonding the new anchors.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain practical experience in:

  • Inspecting existing lower-offs and tree anchors
  • Assessing the rock and choosing an appropriate anchor location
  • Selecting a position that provides a clean and practical abseil station
  • Drilling and preparing holes correctly
  • Cleaning holes for resin anchors
  • Installing and resin-bonding fixed anchors
  • Discussing bolt types, materials, corrosion and long-term anchor integrity
  • Looking “behind the hanger” at the less obvious factors affecting fixed-anchor safety

There will also be plenty of time throughout the day for wider discussion around bolts, corrosion, inspection, replacement decisions and good practice.

What to Bring

Trad rack, normal climbing equipment and old clothes.

The workshop is weather dependent. Conditions need to be dry enough for us to climb and carry out the installation properly.
