About

This course explores aspects of the ethics and sustainability of expeditions and adventurous travel, and how we can make better decisions to ensure a positive impact. It includes considerations around modes of transport, cultural sensitivity, ethics and both the positive and negative impacts individuals and groups can have when travelling, including on people, place and the environment.

Prepare to be challenged in your thinking regarding carbon, the economics of travel, how to plan volunteer project work, the use of porters and local guides and the design of expedition itineraries. You will be encouraged to think about the wide variety of impacts from your adventures, listen to different viewpoints, plan ways of being more sustainable and how to disseminate that in an achievable manner to clients that may look to you for best practice.

The workshop meets the UIMLA requirements for CPD in Sustainability for existing IMLs. The workshop is also very suitable for aspirant IMLs following the revised scheme and counts as 6 hours learning time, where a workshop of this kind is also supplemented with further learning during the training scheme.
