About

Night Navigation in Central Scotland: PURPOSE & LEARNING OUTCOMES: The purpose of the session is to enable members to sharpen their navigation skills amongst fellow leaders and instructors without an Assessor in tow! The moorland is set to the West of and accessible from Stirling and provides a diverse range of features within a very compact area: it's a gem of a training ground yet overlooked by many as, on first sight, it looks complex. Training will be based around setting and using a short orienteering-style course and participants will be encouraged to contribute their favourite tried-and-tested teaching tips. Members are welcome to use smartphone and other digital aids to support their use of their map and compass. Experience the use of the Buddy Beacon system on Viewranger which will be linked to the Ochils MRT IT facility. The Tutor will have the system and a GPS mike (from MRT) running and there is no need for participants to buy Viewranger map specifically for this Course... although close to Stirling we may well experience the instability of systems relying on mobile connections even with line of sight to the city! A short review of the evening will take place in the Forresters’ Arms. MEETING PLACE: Library / Community Hall Car Park -Grid Reference: NS77829238 Address & Postcode: St Ninians Rd, Cambusbarron, FK7 9NU Please note the course will leave the meeting place & journey to the training ground @ 17.45hrs. contact through email, Facebook etc. will not be available in the area, so please use mobile number if you need to get in touch. EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: - Full hill gear appropriate for weather as found on day. Wellington boots with a good tread are adequate in wet weather (non-snow covered). - OS Map: Explorer 348 Campsie Fells. The new version includes a free digital download of the area covered. WORKSHOP PROVIDER: This workshop is being hosted by Andy Cloquet (MIC) of Outdoor Adventure Scotland. CANCELLATION POLICY: If snow decides to plaster the area, accessing the ground is difficult. So, Andy will text participants detailing a postponement or cancellation. If you can't make the alternative date, then Andy will organise a refund of your money. The 8 places will be allocated on a first come first given basis and those remaining will be placed on a reserve list.
