WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

Bridging the gap between SPA and RCI is a one day update and training workshop for people who have completed their Single Pitch Award training and wish to become familiar with the new aspects of the Rock Climbing Instructor syllabus prior to assessment, or for those assessed under the SPA award to update their skills in line with the RCI syllabus. 

This practical outdoor workshop is a great way to update and refresh your skills, revisit particular aspects of the scheme and provide an opportunity to exchange and share good practice under the supervision of an approved course director. 

This outdoor workshop will include the following:

• Group management and set ups – revision of top and bottom roping systems.
• Supervising an assistant outdoors           
• Roles and scope of an assistant
• Opportunities and liabilities
• Briefing and supervision
  
  
• Warm up exercises, relevant for a climbing session
• Teaching skills                                                   
• Effective communications
• Teaching methods  – IDEAS, EDICT etc.
• Progressive reviewing and feedback      

• Clarification of problem solving Creating a learning environment.

• Bouldering – Group management, spotting, exercises and skills practise.

• Sports climbing, understanding the differences, grades and lower offs
• Techniques for lowering off sports climbs
• Include general refresher of current syllabus skills if time allows.

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

Please bring your personal climbing kit with you and wear appropriate clothing for the activity and weather forecast.

MEETING POINT

Meet 9.00am at the pull-in next to the Hideaway Coffee House on the A65 near Junction 36 of the M6. From the motorway junction turn onto the A65 for Skipton, after 200 metres go straight over the roundabout and the pull in is 500 metres on the right. Please bring your own lunch, snacks and drinks for the day.

WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS

All bridging the gap workshops are run by approved Mountain Training course directors of the SPA and now RCI schemes. This particular workshop is hosted by Rob Pugh.

CANCELLATION PROCEDURE

This workshop needs a minimum of 4 bookings to run. Attendees will be notified of cancellations or changes to the workshop 2 weeks before the date of the workshop. Attendees will receive a full refund or will have the option to transfer their booking to another available date.

If you are unable to attend the workshop, if cancellations are received up to 6 weeks before the workshop you will receive a full refund; less than 6 weeks but more than 4 weeks before the course: 50% refund; less than 4 weeks before the course date: no refund will be issued.
