Award Description

This qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to lead hillwalking groups in summer conditions on mountainous routes not requiring the planned use of a rope. Established in 1964, this was the first qualification created by Mountain Training.

Daytime

 

 

Evening

 

Day 1

 

Introductions, method of assessment. Equipment to carry for a day walk, management of incidents, navigation, stream crossings.

Discussion of home papers.

Day 2

 

Mountain day including management of groups on steep ground and emergency rope work.

Preparation for expedition including route planning.

Day 3

 

Expedition focusing on navigation, leadership skills and camp craft.

Night navigation as required.

Day 4

 

Expedition focusing on navigation, leadership skills and camp craft.

Night navigation as required.

Day 5

 

Return from expedition, results, group debrief and individual debriefs.

Course close 5pm.

Maximum ratio 1:4 every day. Candidates to work with two different assessors during the week.
