About

This workshop has been set up by Catherine Bateman - one of BAIMLs regional representatives.

If you have any questions please direct these to Cath who shall be able to advise you further.

Workshop or Session Description: There are 17 species of bat that are known to breed in the UK, many of which are present in the west country, including strongholds for some of the rarest species.  A local ecologist who carries out many bat surveys around the south west is offering an opportunity to discover more about these fascinating animals.

Based near Gunnislake in the Tamar Valley, this workshop will include a talk covering basic bat biology and ecology, distribution, identification and conservation. This will be followed by a talk from the project manager for the Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project, who will give an overview of how this project is looking to secure the future of this rare bat through working with landowners and the public to raise awareness and understanding of how this species uses the landscape.

Following the workshop, we will go to a local pub for dinner before heading out just before dusk to one of the region’s most significant Greater Horseshoe Bat roost sites within an old mine adit to take part in an emergence count. Finally we will take a walk to listen to and identify bats using ultrasound detectors.

No previous experience / knowledge is necessary – the event will be suitable for anyone looking to increase their understanding of bats in the UK.

Come suitably dressed for being outdoors on footpaths at night, with warm clothing and a head-torch. Tea and coffee will be available at the Tamar Valley AONB Centre, and there will be the opportunity to purchase dinner from the pub.

Venue: Tamar Valley AONB, Tamar Valley Centre, Cemetery Road, Drakewalls, Gunnislake, Cornwall, PL18 9FE. This is located on the A390 about half way between Callington and Tavistock. If approaching from the north east, drive along the A30 to Sourton Down and turn south onto the A386 and drive through Tavistock.
