Workshop or Session Description: An advanced course for outdoor navigators who regularly use a Garmin GPS device and want to learn about digital mapping and using Garmin BaseCamp to create and manage routes, waypoints and tracks.

It is ideal for mountain leaders who guide groups in a variety of locations – or manage those that do so.

The course covers the different types of digital mapping and the associated software; it majors on how to obtain cost-free or low-cost mapping that can be used on Garmin GPS devices and the very capable BaseCamp digital mapping software package that runs on Windows or MacOS computers.

Much of the course will be dedicated to using BaseCamp to create waypoints and successful routes, and to manage tracks, maps and other data to enhance safety and consistency when leading on mountains, following long-distance trails or resort-based activities.

There is a considerable practical element to this training with many really useful hints and tips; by the end of the course, participants will experience a step-change in their ability to use BaseCamp and to source and use digital mapping from virtually anywhere in the World.

To benefit from this course, it is essential that participants bring their own Windows or MacOS laptops together with whatever Garmin GPS device and digital mapping they currently use. The course does not cover making or editing digital maps, but DM software and mapping will be supplied, if required, as part of this course, together with extensive high-quality colour illustrated course notes to take away.

Venue: It is classroom-based at the Hollowford Centre in the Hope valley close to Castleton, an easily accessible location with ample parking and plenty of local accommodation possibilities.  An element of the course may be outdoors, so suitable clothing is recommended. Note that there is no suitable Wi-Fi and limited mobile connectivity at Hollowford and in the immediate area.  The course will start at 10.00am and finish by 4.30pm. Details will be provided by e-mail after booking. Hot drinks are available at the Centre, but participants should bring a picnic lunch

INPUT PRICE made payable directly to the Provider.

Initially, the course is only open to BAIML members (including aspirants) and there is a maximum of 6 participants, so there is plenty of opportunity for personal mentoring and tuition, and it qualifies for one-point core CPD which is valid for BAIML, *AMI and MTA.
