FURTHER TRAINING: NATIONAL PLANT MONITORING SCHEME
Weekly NPMS habitat sessions:
This series of NPMS webinars has been prepared to support the MTA members who are contributing towards or thinking of contributing towards the National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS).
In particular, the webinars provide guidance on the recognition and assessment of principal upland habitat types that are recorded during NPMS surveys. Typical features that need to be recorded for the NPMS are described for each habitat type, with additional information to help gain a broad understanding of the importance of the habitats and associated vegetation types, plant species and an outline of key wildlife associations.
Dates and Habitats Covered:
12.11.20 – Woodland, forest and scrub
19.11.20 – Heath and grassland
03.12.20 – Bog, wet heath, marsh and fen
10.12.20 – Freshwater, rock outcrops, cliffs and screes
About NPMS - the National Plant Monitoring Scheme
The National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS) is a national habitat-based monitoring scheme that has been developed by a partnership of plant conservation charities and government conservation bodies. The Scheme collects information on habitat and vegetation provided by volunteer vegetation surveyors.
The NPMS needs greater survey coverage within hill and mountain areas, and would greatly value contributions from MTA members who would be interested in undertaking habitat and vegetation surveys.
One of the great things about the NPMS is that it has several levels of survey input, from beginner to more accomplished vegetation survey and assessment, where all levels of survey are of value to the NPMS. The Scheme is supported by plenty of resources and expert training opportunities to help MTA members to build their knowledge and identification skills in upland habitats and vegetation.
