This workshop will provide insight into what risk is, what a risk assessment is, how to quantify risk and how to manage and minimize any risk that could be present in the activities that you lead as an International Mountain Leader.
We will look at a range of scenarios and at specific examples relevant to the role of the IML. It will be shown how risk assessments can influence our decision making and planning. There will be short tasks during the workshop that the participants will be asked to complete and you will be asked to share some of your answers with the group for discussion.
Participants are also encouraged to bring an example from their own life experiences from which they think that more knowledge of risk would, in hindsight, have helped.
This workshop will run online via Zoom. It is recommended that participants sit in a quiet location, have a webcam, decent loudspeaker and microphone on their computer and pen and paper to hand. There will be time to grab tea and coffee during the workshop.
The workshop will be run by Peter Chapman who is an IML, MLW, MLS, RCI and Norwegian Glacier Guide with over 20 years experience of working in the outdoors. Peter has his own business leading groups in the mountains primarilly in the Nordic countries, Scotland, Iceland and Greenland, and also running skills courses throughout the year. Peter is also the Technical Director for BAIML and he is a qualified Health & Safety Officer in Denmark.
