A hands-on, very practical GPS navigation skills workshop for those wanting to develop their own skills and understanding of this fast-moving technology, those who want to deliver GPS skills instruction, and for those who want to get to grips with the implications of GPS for the outdoor professional.
The course will cover:
GPS fundamentals (how it works)
GPS devices and technology (what it can do)
Essential GPS skills for outdoor navigators (how to do it or teach it)
Using GPS with paper maps (the old way of using a GPS)
Digital maps and how they differ to paper maps (you can get brilliant digital maps for free)
Ad-hoc and key-point navigation using a GPS as the primary tool (the new way of using a GPS)
Implications of GPS for leaders and instructors (massive)
Practical advice for using a GPS device (so you appear to know what you’re doing)
Equipment
If you own a GPS device, bring it along, but you’ll be able to borrow from a range of best-in-class modern GPS, get hands-on and do amazing navigational feats with them that you might never had thought possible. Map, compass and laptop definitely not required; open mind essential.
