Award Description
This international award trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to guide climbing (including the coaching of lead climbing) skiing and mountaineering on rock, snow & ice, and in alpine terrain. It is administered by the BMG to the standards set by the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA). The Guide’s carnet is an extensively used professional award.
This is the BMG Ski Assessment. It lasts 6 days (with a briefing meeting on the Saturday evening before the test) during which we'll try to cover all aspects of skiing and ski touring. The exact plan will depend on conditions we find at the time and may change:
Day 0: evening briefing and discussion of the plan for the week.
Day 1: Off-piste, lift access day in the Chamonix valley.
Day 2: Technical day touring using ropes and mountaineering equipment.
Day 3-6: 4-day hut-based touring involving hut-to-hut touring and glacier travel.
Please bring with you:
- completed, signed logbook showing at least 15 days of experience with a fully qualifed (minimum 3 years) guide including 10 days hut touring (each trip at least 3 days/2 nights)
- Avalanche fieldbook with 10 snow profiles from different areas through the season.
- Suitable equipment for ski touring, hut touring, mountaineering.
