Award Description

The Hill and Moorland Leader award is designed for people who want to lead groups in the hill and moorland areas of the UK and Ireland. This award is a wonderful opportunity to learn the leadership skills required to feel confident about taking people out walking. As you may have guessed from the descriptive title of this award, it focuses on non-mountainous terrain.

The course is based at Swindon Local Authority's Outdoor Education Centre Plas Pencelli in the Brecon Beacons. It's a large well equipped centre with extensive attractive grounds. It's an ideal central position in the Brecon Beacons National Park and in Wales means that many venues are accessible. The course is for adults who have a genuine interest in hill walking and group leadership who wish to lead young people and adults in non-mountainous high or open country in the United Kingdom. This course includes theoretical and practical sessions on the main aspects of the HML Award scheme syllabus. The course is for potential Leaders and assumes basic competence as a hillwalker. You will need to be registered with the ML and create an account on their Candidate Management System (CMS). Log your experience via the DLOG system. You should complete this before the course. Twenty quality hill walking days is the normally accepted minimum level of experience for attendance on the training course.
