WORKSHOP CONTENT
Much of our time spent in the outdoors, on the mountains or in the lowland, will involve rivers in some way: whether following the watercourse, crossing it, or simply passing through their valleys.
This workshop will enhance your understanding of how and why their features form and the life that can be found within them. We will explore the upper, middle and lower course of the river Caerfanell in the Brecon Beacons to investigate how its landforms have developed, how they reflect the processes in action and what factors affect the relative abundance of invertebrates living there. This will help you to ‘read’ rivers, which may help you to choose rivers crossings and identify risks.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Landform and feature identification, reading flow conditions, freshwater (f/w) invertebrate I.D., f/w invertebrates as indicator species, habitat/microhabitat recognition.

WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS
A Field Studies Tutor in the Brecon Beacons since 2006, Stephen has a background in Physical Geography and Earth Sciences, with a special interest in glacial geomorphology. He now works for Trewern Outdoor Education Centre as the field studies specialist, and has his own business: Beacons Field Studies. Among several outdoor qualifications he is a Summer ML and holds an outdoor First Aid qualification.
He has a passion for outdoor learning and loves sharing what he has learned with others. In the course of working for local field centres, heritage centres and outdoor education centres, Stephen has acquired excellent local knowledge; learning about the best sites and examples of landforms, the flora and fauna of the area, and finding out about the underlying geology, which affects so much of what happens on the surface.
He has intimate knowledge of this river, using it for fieldwork with all Key Stages, as a gorge walking venue, and is a favourite place to bring friends and family. It's also a great place for photography!
