Award Description
The Hill & Mountain Skills scheme is a great way to develop your personal skills and confidence in all elements of hill and mountain walking. From planning a coastal walk to navigating in complex terrain, these courses are an ideal opportunity to learn the basics and enjoy the countryside. THIS IS NOT THE HILL AND MOORLAND LEADER SCHEME.
Wooler on the edge of Northumberland National Park is an ideal location for the Hill Skills course. The town has a choice of accommodation types, there is a great Youth Hostel and there are campsites as well as a selection of seviced and self-catering places to stay. The Hill Skills course begins on the Saturday morning with an introduction to the weekend of activities ahead of us and there is an opportunity to meet and get to know your fellow candidates. On day 1, we'll be heading out of Wooler and walking directly into Northumberland National Park. Everyone gets a chance to use the map and the compass and navigation underpins the whole two days of the course. Don't worry if you're new to map reading and a beginner with the compass, your course director Patrick Norris has taught lots of people map reading skills and by the time the course ends on Sunday afternoon, you will be well on the way to becoming a skilled map reader and a navigator. The National Park landscape allows us to cover all aspects of the Hill Skills syllabus and although the pace might be slow, the objective is for you to learn all about hill walking in the right environment and at a pace that suits you. On Day 2 and depending on how successful I felt Day 1 was received, we'll be heading out for a full day in the Cheviot Hills, maybe tackling a summit or two, but always with a focus on the syllabus. If you have any questions about my Mountain Training (England) Hill Skills Course, you can get in touch with me and all my contact details are on my website, or use the links on this site to reach me. Thank you, Patrick Norris, Course Director of the Hill Skills Course in Northumberland.
