Award Description
Our Rock Skills courses are designed to provide structured training opportunities for people who want to learn more and become independent climbers. There are three different levels so that complete beginners and those with more experience can choose the most appropriate starting point.
After attending Rock Skills Intermediate you will be able to:
Be in a strong position to second a lead climber on natural rock.
Choosing Suitable Venues using guide books & mobile devices to find crags and routes, crag etiquette & the work of the mountaineering councils.
Climbing Skills on how to warm up & avoiding injury, how to develop movement skills & widen your repertoire of climbing moves.
Environment knowledge learning the impact of climbers at the crag, ethics, access & environmental considerations.
Technical skills building anchors, selecting runners, ropework, belaying, holding falls, lowering, seconding a route & personal abseiling.
Footwear & equipment Selecting the correct equipment for personal performance, shoes etc
Introduction to climbing protection
Hazards & emergancy procedures identifying hazards, managing risk when climbing & abseiling, how to get help from mountain rescue.
Pre Requirements
Completion of Rock Skills introduction course, or have logged 10 routes on indoor walls or crags & 10 belays in the DLOG.
Day one venue : Cleeve Hill 9am-5pm
Day two venue : Symonds yat rock 9am-5pm
