About

Workshop Content

A full-day course covering all elements of the security on steep ground syllabus, with particular focus on those areas of steep-ground management which the participants on the course would like help with.

It’s an area of the syllabus which can confuse candidates and seasoned Mountain Leader’s alike, so the focus will be to simplify the principles and practices of managing groups in steep ground, helping people develop a toolbox of skills which they feel comfortable using and know when to use.

During the course, you’ll get lots of opportunities to ask questions, practice techniques, and get feedback, all with the aim of enabling you to approach your assessment and/or work as a Mountain Leader with much greater confidence.

Who will be delivering this workshop?

This workshop will be delivered by Jake Phillips, who is the chief instructor at Adventure Expertise, which is based in Hathersage in the Peak District. Jake has been delivering training courses in hillwalking, climbing and mountaineering in the UK and overseas for the past 14 years. He holds the WMCI qualification and is an ML course director. He can regularly be found instructing and coaching on the Mountain Leader and Lowland Leader courses, as well as the various skills courses, that Adventure Expertise provide.

What shall I bring with me?

You may find that a camera, smartphone or good old pen and paper may be useful to make notes during the workshop.

You will need to be dressed for weather conditions encountered on the day, we’ll be on the hill all day as such please don’t forget to bring a pack lunch and snacks.

Also, if you have your own rope and a helmet then please bring these along with you. If you don’t have either of these then we can provide them for you.
