Award Description

Our Rock Skills courses are designed to provide structured training opportunities for people who want to learn more and become independent climbers. There are three different levels so that complete beginners and those with more experience can choose the most appropriate starting point.

About

Who is this for?

This course is for folks who identify as a women or non-binary that would like to experience outdoor climbing.

I provide an invaluable safe space for folks to challenge themselves and feel comfortable to ask all the questions (from peeing, perioding and pooing to technical questions about mountaineering).  Honesty and vulnerability are seen as strength on all my courses and events. It means we understand each other better and the course gets tailored to your needs.

Reasons why these spaces are so great:

  • more comfortable to express yourself

  • less intimidating

  • Women leading ensures everyone's needs are met

  • feel safer, more supported and comfortable

  • ensure that your voice is heard and listened to

  • We will be able to address issues that challenge us in the outdoors

  • You can feel comfortable in showing your own vulnerabilities without any judgement

  • Meet others that have similar interests as yourself

  • Together we will build up your self confidence, independence and skills

What we will be doing?

Climbing outside for the first time! And learning lots of awesome things like:

Background and Planning. An awareness of the types of places you can climb in the UK and Ireland, how to use guidebooks and mobile devices to find crags and routes, crag etiquette and the work of the mountaineering councils.

Climbing Skills. Fundamental movement skills and climbing styles.

Footwear and Equipment. Footwear and equipment selection and how to use the kit you choose.

Technical Skills. Tying into a harness, belaying, spotting and how to abseil.

Environmental Knowledge. The impact of climbers at the crag, ethics, access and environmental considerations for climbers.

Hazards and Emergency Procedures. Identifying hazards, managing risk, understanding common injuries, how to get help and the role of Mountain Rescue and associated emergency services.
