About

Why do our mountains look they way they do? This is the fourth in a series of workshops looking at how the mountains of South Wales formed, this time looking at a glaciated environment. A chance to develop your understanding of landscape in a stunning environment, ideal for anyone prepping for a Mountain Training qualification, established leaders that would like to know more so they can pass on the knowledge, or anyone that's ever wondered why our mountains are the way they are.

WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

We will use the terrain of Craig Cerrig Gleisiad to put into context the glaciation of the British Isles, and how the mountain environment has developed over the last 2.6 million years. We'll look for evidence of the most recent ice age and how the landscape has changed since its final retreat.

This has relevance for interpreting the glaciated landscape across northern Europe. There will also be opportunity to explore the geology, soils and ecology of the corrie and surrounding peaks, an understanding of which could be applied in any mountain environment.

By attending this workshop you will gain an understanding of:

  • Evolution of the upland landscape in northern Europe, particularly during and after the last ice age
  • Effects of ice masses of different scales
  • Influence of geology on landscape
  • Upland/moorland ecology
  • Mountain soil development

We will also work on developing landform interpretation skills, identifying features of the landscape to infer processes, chronology and scale.
