About

WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

This is night navigation practise opportunity that will be run as a peer-to-peer learning activity for Mountain Training Association members, held off-path on the rough heather moorland in the vicinity of Birchen Edge (east of Baslow village) at night and lasting approx. 2.5 hours

The start location is the Eastern Moors Partnership car park next door to the Robin Hood pub. (OS Grid Ref. SK 280 721) Please don't use the pub's own car park, it's for customers only.

This activity will allow people, working in small groups, to seek out a set of pre-identified map features and obstacles on the ground on the moors while using navigation strategies and techniques suitable for both night-time and poor-visibility conditions.

As a peer-to-peer activity attendees will be expected to be familiar with basic map and compass techniques applicable to off-path navigation in poor visibility and be able to take care of themselves on challenging high moorland terrain at night.

There will be an opportunity to re-convene in a pub a short drive away to de-brief after the event if wished.

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

Bring clothing and equipment suitable for hill walking in winter including rain and windproof jacket (with hood) and over trousers, sturdy walking boots (knee-length gaiters also recommended), plenty of warm insulation layers, hats and gloves and a head-torch (and spare batteries or a spare head-torch).

Also a OS Explorer OL24 "White Peak" map (either laminated or in a good map case), a fine marker pen to mark your map, a good quality navigation compass, a simple first aid kit and your mobile phone.

It may also be wise to either carry an emergency small group shelter or a plastic emergency bivvi bag.

CATERING/FOOD

There is a public house adjoining the car park where refreshment may be available, as well as a toilet (but for customers only). It might be wise to bring a little emergency food and a small amount to drink.
