'Teaching Indoor Leading for Mountaineering Instructors'

Whilst teaching leading is a key element of the MCI scheme, many MCIs/WMCIs who competently teach leading on crags have limited experience of teaching leading indoors in the contrasting and unique environment of the climbing wall.

This is a day long workshop for MCIs/WMCIs (Full and Trainees) who wish to improve their knowledge and increase their skill set for teaching lead climbing on indoor walls, or for those instructors who have limited opportunity to teach indoor leading who would like a focused refresher day.

This workshop will investigate:

- Progressions into leading

- what are the signs that individuals are ready to lead?

- Moving from bottom roping to lead climbing, and appropriate choice of lead routes

- Matching appropriate belay devices and ropes

- Techniques for clipping quick draws and top anchors

- Belaying for leading

– When to move from 'static' to 'dynamic' belaying, and the concept of reducing impact forces

- Teaching of holding and taking falls and the pros and cons of weight bags / ground anchors

- Teaching effective lowering

- Dealing with potential problems

- Using the bouldering wall to teach movement skills for leading

The workshop will be run by Rob Pugh, local freelance instructor and AMI Chair. Rob has many years experience of working within the climbing wall environment and understands the unique demands they place on the instructor.

As well as being a CWI and RCI Provider, Rob is also a CWDI Provider and will incorporate elements of his experience of teaching on this MT Award into the workshop. Equipment needed: your usual wall kit inc. lead rope

Cost is £54 plus wall entry fee.
