A mighty contingent of 11 of us slogged up to the Couvercle Hut. The route up involved a long march up the Mer de Glace glacier. This provided some group members with their first glacier experience and also involved a slightly alarming stretch up some terrifying ladders. Once arrived and greeted by the superb views of the Grand Jorrasses, the group practically took over the hut and made quick work of its wine supplies and excellent food.
At about 3am Brian Leite and I set off to climb the South face of the Aiguilles du Moine (3412m). A long day and it was all a lot easier than the dratted ladders we'd climbed to get to the hut the day before. Returning back along the glacier we all pretty much had to run to get the last train down to Chamonix!
