Since walking with a club I've done a lot less solo walking than I used to do, so I was keen to put in a big solo day ahead of my ML training on hills I'd not explored before. I set out from the New Dungeon Gill carpark on a day of reasonable weather with plenty of daylight hours not sure exactly how many peaks I'd take in, or whether I'd head towards Scarfell Pike or Glamara. Route finding was easy on a day of good weather and heavily cairned tracks. I was a little disappointed that I didn't have time to make the summits of Broad Crag and Ill Crag (that I passed close to) on account of my pre-arranged evening rendesvous but I was treated to a sudden burst of evening sunshine and the remarkable treat of finding myself (for a few minutes at least) alone on the top of Scarefell Pike, which made it very hard to be motivated to start decending at all. Total of 10.75hours travel time, this is my longest recent fell day. This was my first time on all the peaks listed.
Area :
Southern Fells (Scafell Pike)
The Southern Fells Include Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, occupy a broad area to the south of Great Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. High and rocky towards the centre of the Lake District, the Southern Fells progressively take on a moorland character toward the south west. In the south east are the well known Furness Fells, their heavily quarried flanks rising above Coniston Water.
