Extending from Torridon in the north to Knoydart in the south, and including Glen Shiel, Glen Carron and Applecross, Northern Highlands South includes many excellent and varied trad climbing venues, both in the mountains and on outcrops. The high cliffs of Beinn Eighe are simply one of the very best locations to go rock climbing in the whole of the British Isles, with many outstanding climbs on climber-friendly quartzite, while if the weather doesn’t allow a visit there the nearby gneiss cliffs of Diabaig offer climbs that are beautiful in both quality and location. The sandstone cliffs of Applecross also have many popular climbs. While the trad climbing opportunities elsewhere in Northern Highland South are more scattered and less frequented, they will certainly repay the adventurous.
One of the group was keen to try leading. After a session at the base of the crag reviewing how to place nuts and hexes,they led the route with a slack top rope in place to protect them in the event of a fall. I then climbed the route alongside the second, we inspected the gear placements and evaluated their quality before removing them.
