Description

Adult learn to climb course. 3x 2hour sessions over 3 weeks. Followed by Adult social night in-between each course.
Session one plan:
Site tour and safety.
Introductions - Who, why and experience.
Course outline,
Icebreaker - Human knot, Relay races
Helmets and Harnesses - followed by challenge to allow me to gauge the groups climbing ability and information retention.
Knot work - tie a Fig. 8 knot, how to thread it through the harness correctly and tie a rethread Fig.8 with double stopper. Introduce the idea of using a marker on the body so that you always have just enough rope to tie the knot.
Belaying - how to set up a `bug`, belay stance and correct belay technique and why we belay in this manner. Lowering off. All of this done on the ground, floor walking until the group has grasped the basic concept of the techniques.
Climbing - putting our newly taught skills into practice with students belaying each up the wall with me tailing their ropes (2 lines maximum).
Session 2 plan:
Warm up - Valleys and Volcanoes, traverse relay races.
Helmets and harnesses - this time not nicely laid out for the group, but in a tangled pile. This is to see how well they can remember what a harness is suppose to look like and put it on correctly.
Climbing - back to the wall and climbing until half way through the session. Reinforcing good practices and coaching those whom require a little more help.
Falling - Introduce the group to how to hold a fall and (if possible) use another member of staff to run a demo on how to hold a fall. Group practice of holding a fall, with floor walking and then put new skills into practice on the wall with students throwing themselves off the wall once feet are above the 3rd clip.
Boulder Induction - run a boulder room induction for all students and get them set up on system.
Session 3 plan;
Warm up - "bootcamp warm up" pulse raiser followed by dynamic stretches running through all muscle groups systematically.
Helmets and harnesses - as session 2.
Climbing - let the group do a few warm up climbs and take a, figurative, back seat. Only step in when needed. Once the group has done a few climbs, put them on harder routes and give them a few technique pointers to help them out. By doing this, they will be exposed to natural falls instead of deliberately throwing themselves off the wall as in session 2.
Course closure/feedback/review - time to congratulate those who passed, explain the next steps for those who did or did not pass the course. Get feedback on course delivery and experiences.
