Description

I led a relatively inexperienced group along the icy track up Glen Dessary from where we had parked at the western end of Loch Arkaig (NM988917). I was leading the group. There was a lot of glen mist but we could see blue sky above through it. The track is a long one and when we hit a plateaux at NM886946 we took a northerly track which rapidly became buried under deep but fairly well consolidated snow. This led us into Coire na Ciche and the buried-frozen Allt Coire na Ciche. The climb up to the col between the two Munros was very steep and I organised us into a line - kicking steps (wearing crampons - it was at least Grade I) and using axes as an aid and rotating around so that after a short time, the person at the head moved to the back and so forth. At the col (NM906965) we could leave our bags and it was an easy ascent up each of the Munros. We returned the same way making use of the steps we had kicked on the way up the steep section facing into the snow.
- Significant mountains (Munros)
- Navigation and group management on steep terrain.
- Knowledge increased (and let's face it - satisfaction).
- Safety awareness - especially managing the steep ground ascent and descent.
- Over 5 hours
- UK mountain terrain in winter
- Axes and crampons used.

Area : Loch Eil to Glen Shiel

The Great Glen to the east, the A87 to the north and the A830 to the south separate this area from its surroundings and enclose an area of high mountains and low glens. The highest mountain is Sgurr na Ciche (1040m) and further north the South Glen Shiel Ridge is formed by a whopping seven Munros! Also in the area is The Saddle (1010m) which is home to the classic Forcan Ridge. Peaks in the mountains list are all above 900m.
