Epic day. I set up the forest track from Invervar in Glen Lyon for the traditional round of 4 Munros. At NN659496 the track splits and one crosses the river and heads up to Carn Gorm. I`d done that one in January 2017 so it was the other three which were on my hitlist. I set off alone following the track up alongside the Inver Burn. When this split I carried on the NW fork taking me to he col of An Sgorr an Meall Garbh. But I did a lot of going off piste to cut corners.
Grom Meall Garbh, it was a fairly straight forward route. I had to nav (time, place and compass twiddly bits a few times when there was no path or when the showers came in.
Lots of nav practice and getting winter confident again!
- Significant mountains (Munros)
- Navigation along a wide plateau plus some steep short descents.
- Knowledge increased along with confidence at the start of the winter.
- Safety awareness - actually forcing myself to use an axe for short descents with possible serious consequences of a slip (not off a cliff but onto boulders).
- Over 5 hours
- UK mountain terrain in winter
- Axes used, crampons carried.
Area :
Bridge Of Orchy (Beinn A'chreachain) To Schiehallion
The mountains immediately to the south of Loch Rannoch and to the north of Glen Lyon stretch all the way from Schiehallion (1083m), the birthplace of Charles Hutton’s contour lines, to Beinn Dorain (1076m) near the Bridge of Orchy. There are twelve Munros and a number of other peaks (above 800m) in the mountains list. The peaks to the south of Glen Lyon are included in the Glen Lyon to Glen Dochart & Loch Tay area.
