Part of a Rock Climbing Proficiency course being taught for CCAT. Morning involved teaching lead climbing (observed by an MIA). Plenty of demonstration of what to do (and what not to do). Cadets were then observed lead climbing with a slack top-rope. Feedback was given, but generally they got it first time.
Afternoon moved on to leading without the top-rope. Some experienced a lot more nerves and had to be coached into performing well. I was lucky that as this was well into a week-long course with the group, I knew them pretty well and was able to judge their readiness; it would be much harder if they had just rocked up for a day and I would need to develop ways to evaluate more quickly with perhaps only seeing a few top-roped climbs.
