Description

I climbed Beinn Bhuide with a friend. We started out at 8am, as there is a long walk in and limited daylight hours in November. It was a beautiful sunny autumn day, and it wasn't until we got to about 800m that the temperature suddenly plummeted. My iPhone went dead, due to the cold, and my friend's iPhone was almost completely drained.
A local man we met had advised us to take a recently built hydro path as a shortcut. We decided against it, as it wasn't on the map and we were worried about getting lost. But on the way back, we thought we'd try it. I got increasingly worried that it might take us in the wrong direction, as late afternoon was approaching, and we only had a tiny bit of phone power. At one point the path split, and we had to retrace our steps slightly. Luckily, Loch Fyne came into view, so we could see what direction we were heading in. I was still concerned that if dusk fell before we were back we might not be able to see Loch Fyne any longer, however we were soon back at ground level. We were on the wrong side of the river and had to walk through a working quarry, but we arrived back at our car at 4.15pm, just as evening was setting in. I always carry a phone charger now.

Area : Inveraray to Crianlarich (Ben Lui)

From the Arrochar Alps to Ben Lui, this area is home to nine Munros. Half of the peaks in the area are within the boundaries of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, while the others lie to the west. The three summits of The Cobbler (884m) contain some of the best climbing in the Southern Highlands while Ben Lui in winter looks positively Alpine. Access is relatively straightforward from the A83, A82 or A85.
