I decided to do Cnoc Coinnich from Lochgoilhead, walking in via the Cowal Way. I had recced the walk the week before, in glorious sunny winter conditions. Unfortunately when I organised a Meetup event on this route, the snow was much deeper and more difficult to walk in and the weather was cloudy and overcast. There were seven of us, and we had great conversation on the walk in. It got tougher as we started to trudge up the mountain through the snow. Me and a very experienced walker in the group took it in turns to break the trail, which was hard work! It seemed to take forever to reach the top, and one man, who hadn't done much hillwalking for a few months, said it was the toughest hillwalk he'd ever done! I kept telling him that we were nearly at the top, because he almost turned back. We all made it to the summit, but sadly there were no views. We did some bumsliding on the way down, which was fun, and had coffees at the Lochgoilhead hotel afterwards.
Area :
Loch Fyne to Loch Long (Beinn an Lochain)
South of the A83 as far as Dunoon and sandwiched in between Loch Fyne and Loch Long are a number of peaks, none of which qualify for Munro status. The southern half of the Arrochar Alps includes Beinn an Lochain, which at 901m was wrongly included in Sir Hugh Munro’s original list of 3000ft peaks in Scotland. The mountains list contains all peaks above 600m.
