Corrour Bothy - Cairn Toul - Achlean. Second day of a two-day bothy outing after IML summer training and before WEMSI FR course. Having had an very long day with many very long detours to find suitable river crossings from the Ruigh Aiteachain (where I had been uncouthly disturbed at 2am by late bothy arrivers) to the Corrour Bothy along the valley, I decided to take the more direct route back. Snow-line constant at around 900m with very strong winds and >50m visibility made for interesting navigation, particularly passing through the micro-nav hot-spot to the South of Loch Eanaich.
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
