Description

I had met Lou, an aspirant Winter ML, in Lock Ossian SYHA back in February and we were surprised and pleased to bump into each other again in Aviemore. We had both been developing our solo experience and over coffee after I returned from the Lairg Ghru decided to spend the next day challenging ourselves to some more technical terrain which we would not have confidently travelled alone. The avalanche forecast was very good, and while visibility wasn't likely to be fantastic, we'd have a choice of Grade one Gullies. We devised a flexible route that enabled reconnaissance of Grade one terrain, an opportunity to try some out if so inclined, but avoid it if that compromised our overall journey.
Really fantastic day of checking things out, we walked in to Coire an t-Sneachda and deciding we weren't confident for any of the routes in there picked out way up the East side if the Coire, over Stob Coire an t-Sneachda and in to Locah Avon via Coire Domhain. From here we had a good view up Pinnacle Gully, which we confidently soloed, needing to cut a few steps to scale a short section of ice at the exit.
Now in significantly poor visibility we decided to make the most of the rest of the day and made a wide circuit first to Cairn Etchachan then taking a wide loop round the plateau to the West via various micro navigation points finally to the 1141 spot height and decent via Fiachall a' Choire Chais.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
