Weekend of two halves. Big talk again about avalanche and weather before heading out to Coire an-t Sneachda. The N-NE slopes were absolutely loaded but a few climbers were in gulleys and the goat track (made for interesting discussion).
Put crampons on over the icy path and had some walking exercises and a game to get the group used to them. Surprisingly no faff getting them on.
Bit of nav to get them thinking about timing but kept it simple. Mick used whatever was there so also a few options to walk over boulders and mixed terrain to demonstrate crampons.
We did some steep section ascent/descent in the moraines, snow shelters and also different snow types (especially windslab). We decided against going to the flat ice as all three of us were unhappy about going near what could have been an almighty run out zone.
Clients all seemed to have loved it!
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
