Description

2 Day Walk as equals working on most of the ML Syllabus - Focus on Micro/Macro Navigation, Poor Weather Navigation, Flora and Fauna, Ropework
Day 1 - Weather was breezy but dry with good visibility
From the car park near Llyn Eigiau we walked toward the old power station wall and then up on to a feature near high point 582. This was done in legs using only 1:50000 maps. From here we also took it in turns to do legs on 1:50000 skirting around Pen Llithrig y Wrach. Once in the saddle between this and Pen yr Helgi Du we then descended North back down into the valley. We then contoured up the valley to camp near the old mine/tips along side Afon Eigiau. After making camp we headed out in the night to do some micro navigation on 1:25000 maps.
Day 2 - Weather was strong winds with poor visiblity above 700m asl
From camp we then continued on 1:25000 doing small micro navigation legs up towards Ffynnon Llyffant. Once we had reached our target area we then used ropes to practice abseil and belay techniques. From here we made our way up steep ground to reach the summit of Carnedd Llywelyn breaking down some micro navigation legs on the steep ground. Once on the tops visibility at tops was 20m. From the summit we made our way toward Foel Grach but picking points on the broad saddle to really test our navigation on featureless terrain with poor visibility. We then descended toward Llyn Melynllyn practicing confidence roping on the steeper parts of the ground.Once we reached the reservoir we used 1:50000 to return to the car park.

Area : Carneddau

The Carneddau (lit. "the cairns"; Carneddau is a Welsh plural form, and is sometimes anglicised to Carnedds) are a group of mountains in Snowdonia, Wales. They include the largest contiguous areas of high ground (over 2,500 or 3,000 feet (910 m) high) in Wales and England, as well as six or seven of the highest peaks in the country—the Fourteen Peaks. The range also encloses a number of lakes such as Llyn Cowlyd and Llyn Eigiau, and the Aber Falls waterfalls. It is delimited by the Irish Sea to the north, the Conwy valley to the east, and by the A5 road from Betws-y-Coed to Bethesda to the south and west. The area covers nearly 200 square kilometres, about 10% of the area of Snowdonia.
