Description

Visibility was less than 50ft.
Wind gusts were up to 45mph
Rain/sleet showers hit us repeatedly on the walk.
Lead 2 on a guided tour of Pen y Fan and surrounding mountains.
The walk started at the car park, below the Lower Neuadd Reservoir. From here we head North West, up to the filter house. Due to on going work on the reservoir, we were redirected West into a field to take an alternative path round to our first waypoint (50m West of the Western wing of the reservoir). From here we headed on a bearing of 310 for 250m, before realigning on a bearing of 280 for 750m, taking up a steep gully and to our 2nd waypoint (cairn).
Once on the ridgeline, we summited Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cribyn & Fan y Big.
From Fan y Big, we headed South, bearing 170, following the ridge line for approximately 1.3km, before taking a new bearing of 140 and heading over bogland, past 2 noteable outcrops of stones and a cairn. 100m past the cairn, we head NE on a bearing of 60 for 500m until we met up with the Beacons Way path. We followed it SE over Craig y Fan Ddu and steeply down it's Southern flank to a series of waterfalls, before taking the Taff Trail on a bearing of 220, back towards the Taf Fechan Forest for 950m. We found our junction heading back towards the car park and followed it back.
All in all a good day. There was a couple of "stream" crossings, which, given the recent rains had swollen the streams to fledging rivers. My group were able to cross safely, I however, took a slip on the first crossing and landed bum first in the water. No injuries, other than pride and laughs all round.

Area : Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park

Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) is a mountain range in South Wales. In a narrow sense, the name refers to the range of Old Red Sandstone peaks popular with walkers which lie to the south of Brecon. Sometimes referred to as "the central Beacons" they include South Wales' highest mountain, Pen y Fan. The range forms the central section of the Brecon Beacons National Park (Parc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog), a designation which also encompasses ranges both to the east and the west of "the central Beacons". This much wider area is also commonly referred to as "the Brecon Beacons".
