Description

Private 2 Day Winter Skills Course.
Day 1 - looking at movement skills. Westerley winds forecast s headed into Sneachda to try and find some shelter. Tucked in under the Fiacaill Ridge to look at some foot work before walking further up and some ice axe stuff. Continued along to ice patch beneath Fiacaill Buttress for some crampon stuff. Round the other side for a bit of self belay and some ice axe arresting.
Day 2 - more of a journey looking at nav and some shelters. Headed up the ridge to 1141m, saw 2 mountain hares together on the way up! Did some navigation work along the top of Sneachda until the Goat Track col. Pacing over to Coire Domhain with a look at some of the fresh accumulations building up in the area as well as some in-situ snow holes and making emergency shelters. A few more navigation legs on top before heading back down the same way to the ski centre.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
