Description

Coaching Hannah on leading Trad climbs (specifically, leading and protecting the leader) in preparation for a course (0900-1700). The goal was focused 10 trad climb leads in 1 day. Harbourough rocks was selected as the venue for ease of access and its short climbs friendly to beginners which provide enough exposure to learn the mechanics of gear placement without creating un-due stress. The weather was clear but cold - Hannah suffers from chill blanes and poor circulation so temperature management was an additional consideration.

Hannah managed 11 climbs in total. Initially somewhat overwhelmed with placing gear as well as climbing in less than perfect condition Hannah's competence increased with each climb as did her confidence. By focusing on placing gear on the ground we were able to focus attention solely on that activity without other stress/distraction. We then focused on protecting the first move (often from the ground) to reduce anxiety around a fall at low level. At both stages gear was weighted to build confidence in it holding but from a position of safety (ie hand on a jug and sitting down slowly). This allowed Hannah to slowly build up the height and confidence on a range of different and increasingly challenging climbs both technically and length wide.

Getting 10 climbs in and building confidence in gear was a big ask for the day and potentially a little risky. However this was largley mitigated by operating well within the scope of comfort and heigh risk which was down to careful selection of the crag.
