After a Rockhoppers MC trip based in Torver I found myself left in Great Langdale with a much longer walk back to the train station at Foxfield than I had planned. The first night I camped by Stickle Tarn and it was a bit wild and windy and I was in a new and untried tent so had an uncertain sleep. The next day I visited the neolithic axe factory above Dungeon Ghyll and then headed via Stake Pass to Esk Hause. I originally planned to go over Scafell Pike and Scafell but decided it was too busy so I descended down the gully under Knotts of the Tongue to camp at the Sampson's Stones. The final day was a sprint to catch my train: Past Silverybield Crag to Brotherikeld, round Harter Fell to Seathwaite, over the Dunnerdale Fells of Stickle Pike and Great Stickle and then to Foxfield Station
Area :
Southern Fells (Scafell Pike)
The Southern Fells Include Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, occupy a broad area to the south of Great Langdale, Borrowdale and Wasdale. High and rocky towards the centre of the Lake District, the Southern Fells progressively take on a moorland character toward the south west. In the south east are the well known Furness Fells, their heavily quarried flanks rising above Coniston Water.
