2 Day Winter Skills Course. 3 men in their 20s and a woman in her 30s.
Day 1 - Ciste area looking at movement skills, emergency shelters and slips and slides. Slowly journeyed along slopes to right looking at moevement before dropping down and back up to the notch to get out of the wind and look at emergency shelters. Walked over toward Coire Laogh Mor but found slopes were slippy enough on the way. 3 very quick to learn young lads and a slightly older lady made for a tricky dynamic but managed to keep everyone engaged I think.
Day 2 - journey up form the Ski Centre to 1141m then on to top of Cairngorm. Beautiful views on top if quite windy. Then looked at navigation in winter, just as the cloud base dropped and we got white out conditions, perfect timing! Lot's of good navigation legs on the North shoulder then back to the Ptarmigan restaurant. Then perfect weather on the way down back to the car park bumping into a couple of Snow Hares. Great day.
Area :
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
