Description

Supervised a group of 4 friends including a minor (parent and child) on their first day outdoor on grit (0930-1530). The purpose of the day was to get comfortable on outdoor rock with me and a friend leading up routes, setting up an anchor and then bringing the others up as seconds/top roped climbs. The day was free form and focused on enjoyment rather than any other technical goal/outcome. A total of 3 climbs were completed in total but only 2 were used to bring all 4 up. Everyone enjoyed the day despite the cold weather and wet underfoot.

There were several lessons learned 1. The wind at the top belaying is quite different at the base of the edge, ensure sufficient warm clothing was available, especially when top-roping 4 ascents. 2. Get someone else to carry up your approach shoes/trainers, walking in climbing shoes on grass is not ideal. 3. make sure you correctly identify climbs before starting. I accidentally got on HS when I thought I was climbing a Mod! This was significantly more daunting for me and those who followed.

Area : Peak District Grit: Stanage Edge

Simply the finest crag on grit with well over 1000 routes of all grades and styles. The most popular of climbing areas in the UK with a huge number of classic routes. We have split the area into the same divisions as used for UKC logbooks, namely Stanage Popular, Stanage Plantation and Stanage North. Bouldering activities should be entered into the 'Outdoor Bouldering' section of DLOG. Routes on other gritstone crags, such as Burbage North, should be added to the relevant Area as noted in the Area titles.
