Day 1 of a Silver NNAS course with one client. Teaching navigation at intermediate level introducing pacing/timing on rough terrain/ascent/descent as well as compass bearings and setting the map with landscape and compass.
- the individual takes part in the planning and leadership - I planned and tweaked the route according to how well the client was progressing in picking up new skills
- navigation skills are required away from marked paths - Very much so. I was demonstrating many of the techniques involved.
- experience must be in terrain and weather comparable to that found in UK and Irish hills - Howgill Fells.
- knowledge is increased and skills practised - New ways to part knowledge to a client who was not particularly adept at picking up new skills
- attention is paid to safety - Continually. The weather was not pleasant and there were sections of standing around - as well as dealing with social distancing
- five hours or more journey time - 6h
- adverse conditions may be encountered - Strong wind and heavy rain showers. Slippery steep hillsides underfoot.
- ascent of a substantial peak would normally be included in the day - Yarlside.
